Japanese Semiconductor Companies Visit Dholera: Strengthening India’s Chip Manufacturing Vision

15 September, 2023

Overview

Dholera Smart City continues to gain global attention as India pushes forward with its semiconductor mission. In a recent development, a delegation of around 20 Japanese semiconductor ecosystem companies visited the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) to explore collaboration opportunities.

This visit highlights growing international confidence in Dholera’s readiness to support high-tech manufacturing and semiconductor infrastructure.

Global Interest After SEMICON India 2025

The visit comes shortly after SEMICON India 2025, where India showcased strong government support, incentives, and long-term vision for semiconductor manufacturing.

During their visit to Dholera, the Japanese delegation reviewed not just policy advantages, but also on-ground infrastructure and execution capabilities, which are crucial for setting up advanced chip manufacturing facilities.

Strategic Meetings at Dholera’s ABCD Building

Key discussions took place at the ABCD Building, the administrative hub of Dholera.

Representatives from Shimizu Corporation (Japan), known for infrastructure and precision engineering, engaged in detailed talks with GAP Group, one of the leading infrastructure and real estate developers in Dholera’s Activation Zone.

The focus was clear — combining:

  • Japan’s advanced technology
  • India’s scale and workforce
  • Dholera’s smart infrastructure

to accelerate the development of a semiconductor ecosystem in India.

Dholera Emerging as India’s Semiconductor Hub

Dholera is already witnessing rapid progress in semiconductor manufacturing.

  • India’s largest semiconductor fabrication plant, a joint venture between Tata Group and Taiwan’s PSMC, is under development
  • The region is attracting global suppliers and ecosystem partners
  • Infrastructure is being built to support high-tech industries

Japan’s involvement is particularly important, as it plays a key role globally in:

  • Chip-making equipment
  • Specialty gases and materials
  • Precision components

GAP Group Showcases Infrastructure Capabilities

During the visit, GAP Group presented its integrated development solutions to the delegation, positioning itself as a one-stop partner for global companies entering Dholera.

Key projects highlighted include:

  • Akhilam Township
  • Greenera Garden Villa (near Tata Semiconductor Fab)
  • Avant – Premium residential project (1,000 units)
  • Aakar Studio Apartments
  • GAP Industrial Park (40,000 sq. m ready space)

These developments are designed to support not just industries, but also expats, engineers, and management teams relocating to Dholera.

Collaboration Opportunities Discussed

The discussions explored multiple areas of collaboration, including:

  • Setting up precision facilities for Japanese SMEs
  • Developing warehouses and industrial infrastructure
  • Building clean rooms and gas distribution systems
  • Creating skill development programs for semiconductor workforce

These initiatives aim to build a complete ecosystem, not just isolated factories.

Investment and Growth Plans

GAP Group also shared its long-term commitment:

  • Planned investment of ₹2,500 crore in Dholera over 5 years
  • First-mover advantage in multiple segments:
    • First RERA-approved villa project
    • First industrial park
    • First premium 1BHK project

Additionally, the group recently received NOC from Airports Authority of India (AAI) for its Avant project.

Why Dholera is Attracting Global Players

Dholera’s rapid rise is driven by strong fundamentals:

  • Located ~110 km from Ahmedabad
  • Part of Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
  • Spread across 927 sq. km
  • India’s first Platinum Greenfield Smart City

Upcoming infrastructure includes:

  • Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway
  • International Airport (under development)
  • Large-scale industrial zones

Future Outlook: Jobs and Industrial Growth

The semiconductor ecosystem in Dholera is expected to generate massive opportunities:

  • ₹92,000 crore Tata Electronics fab expected by 2027
  • Presence of companies like:
    • Renew Energy
    • INOX Air
    • Polycab
  • 5GW Solar Park development
